Vice President Al Gore has narrowed Governor George W. Bush’s lead to four points in the latest Portrait of America (POA) telephone survey. Bush has 45%, Gore 41%, Ralph Nader 2%, Pat Buchanan 1%, with 10% of voters undecided. In the previous POA survey, Gov. Bush had an 11 point advantage over the Vice President (45% to 34%).

Rasmussen Research conducted the Portrait of America telephone survey of 607 likely voters on September 19, 2000. The margin of sampling error was +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Gov. Bush received 80% of Republican and 23% of Democratic votes. In contrast, Gore received support from 62% of Democrats and 12% of Republicans. Men prefer Bush 47% to 40%. Among women, there is a virtual tie with Bush receiving 43% and Gore 42%. Support for the candidates varies by age. Gore leads with voters over 50 years old while Bush leads among younger voters.
