OT: another point of view:

Actually, the Strategic Oil Reserve is being used for a feel-good gesture to help keep the Dems in power. This is not what it was designed for.

If, way back at the second oil embargo in 1973 (the first was in 1956, when the U.S. withheld oil from Israel and England to show them we were now in charge of the world) we had started a Manhattan Project-style development of alternative energy sources, then today we wouldn't be buying any energy from anyone, and we could just ignore everything that happens in the Persian Gulf. As it is, the Oil Reserve is completely inadequate to maintain oil supplies, which leaves the U.S. Army as the real Guarantor of our energy supplies.
