>>If, way back at the second oil embargo in 1973 ....... we had started a Manhattan Project-style development of alternative energy sources, then today we wouldn't be buying any energy from anyone, and we could just ignore everything that happens in the Persian Gulf. As it is, the Oil Reserve is completely inadequate to maintain oil supplies, which leaves the U.S. Army as the real Guarantor of our energy supplies.<<

Pls allow me to join in a little late on the of topic of energy supply.

My thought is that the world independent of crude oil is not of the best interest to the US (economy). To put an end to the use of fossil fuel could harm US economy. Because as long as the Saudi of the world keep their wealth in US$ base asset, every barrel of crude oil pumping from the ground is the new money US Gov can print out of paper.

Abandon of fossil fuel for a cleaner cheaper alternative fuel could not happen without negative effect to the US economy. The US is dependent on Oil for more than just an energy source, the world consumption of crude oil is the backbone of the US economy.
