Hi, Frank - There was no pretense in my post; if I 'know' anything, it is solely through the medium of lurking while you, elmat, justone, ftth and others discuss the esoterica of networking.

So, if I have any knowledge at all, you have only yourself to blame! >g<

But often I find the dialogue becomes so advanced that I lose the thread; at times, it takes me a week to decipher a few lines of the discussions.

Thank you for your response; I will be ordering Stallings and Slyke tonight.

I have one other question, more specific. In an ethernet-type network, which I understand is [relatively] unmanaged, is it possible for you to describe the mechanism by which the intended recipient "grabs" the appropriate data? And is it true, in a general sense, that overcapacity is the only means by which an ethernet can guarantee transmission/reception?

Thanks again, Frank.

Best regards,

Jim
