why?

Also, why would Gore want to distance himself from the decision to release reserves. Just to have the appearance it wasn't a political ploy? That doesn't make sense. Of course he's going to want to take some credit for doing right by the american people.

PS I don't buy the "security threat" counter argument. A crippling recession is the biggest threat to the country and the world, IMO.

Say what you want about Gore and the Administration and the SPR (I think the move was on its own merits worth trying, and politically irresistible), but no one in American politics has been more out front on the need for conservation and fossil fuel alternatives than Gore. You can blame him, I suppose, for not being willing to commit political suicide when few seemed to have ears to hear and opponents were playing demagogue on the issue against him.
