There is a difference between a television show and a song from a CD. If I record a television show (for my own non-commercial use), the producer of that TV show is still paid through the sales of commercial airtime. If I download a song from Napster (for my own non-commercial use), the artist receives no payment. In the TV recording situation, it is still a mutually beneficial arrangement, whereas in the music/napster situation, only the person who has downloaded the music benefits, while the artist receives nothing. The TV v. Music comparision is an "apples to oranges" comparison based on the reasons cited above.

If we artists do not get paid for their work, there will be far fewer artists out there providing the art that we enjoy. For selfish reasons, I will continue paying for the music that I like so that my favorite artists can continue to eat. When Napster implements a way that the artists can get paid for the download, then I will be its biggest fan.

With that being said, I rarely use the VCR at all and then only to tape boxing matches which I have paid for.
