The one thing that will stop it, if a way is not developed to ensure payment to the artists, is that you won't have any decent artists that are willing to produce material for a bunch of people who want something for nothing.

No doubt there will be thousands and thousands of bands with the talent of a lamp post who would normally be weeded out by the record company A&R guys who will be more than willing to post their stuff on these sites to be downloaded for free. And maybe one or two out of those many thousands actually have some stuff that is worth listening to. But since not enough people will be willing to voluntarily send them payment for their music, those one or two decent bands will be reduced to eating dog food and living in a communal one bedroom apartment with leaky plumbing. And after going through their last can of Alpo that they bought with money they borrowed from their parents, they will say to each other "screw this, this rock god stuff sucks cuz we don't have enough money to feed ourselves and the chicks don't seem to be interested in us when our breath smells of dog food". Then they'll break up the band and all go get jobs flipping burgers, cuz at least people are willing to put out for a cheeseburger.

On the MTV Music Awards recently, they did a cute little skit about Napster and other music distribution sites. The tag line at the end of the skit was "Sharing is great, as long as it ain't your stuff".....Amen.
