The liner notes to his cd anthology relate that sometime in the late sixties Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones refused to listen to anything but Robert Johnson recordings for part of a year. (I think it shows in his ominous guitar opening on Gimmer Shelter and other songs.) One day he had Mick Jagger listen along with them and Jagger asked who was accompanying Johnson in a guitar duet. The reality was that Johnson was playing alone and that he was so magical (and diabolical) in his guitar playing that he was able to sound like two different players.
