No, I did not go to New Market. That is one of the places I'd like to visit during my next eastern-states swing.

I may be wrong, but I believe the (Prussian) Union general at New Market was Carl Schurz, for whom a dormitory is named at the University of Missouri.

Other places that I have enjoyed and would recommend include Stonewall Jackson's house in Lexington, Va., and the Confederate White House/Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. Stonewall was a most rigid man. The knowledgeable tour guide pointed out that he never accepted questions from students during his lectures at VMI. The reason? If the students needed to ask a question, it proved they weren't paying attention.
