No politics on the other thread (despite what a senile thread leader recommended), but some of those here might be interested in the following, which is a superb discussion by Nobel-Prize-winning economist Robert Solow of why the Gore plan (use the surplus to reduce the debt) is more sensible than the Bush plan (use the surplus to give rich mudges a tax break). It also may just be as good a demonstration of how to write serious complicated stuff for a lay audience as I have ever seen:
