Everyone in Washington knew about JFK's affairs, and many other Presidential affairs, but they weren't so desperate for power as to drag the entire country through it. Scumbria, I have a great deal of respect for your opinion, but I think your memory of political events is poor. "Monicagate" began when someone plopped into Ken Star's lap tapes revealing that a young lady was being pressured to sign a false sworn deposition, drawn up by one of the president's lawyers. At the same time, that women had been offered a lucrative job, for which she was not qualified, procured by someone previously under investigation for obstruction of justice, Clinton's close friend Vernon Jordan. Would you have advised Starr not to investigate? And do you think that Whitewater was a waste of time? It was an investigation about the bilking of a Savings and Loan, fraud, and other various illegal activities. Here are some facts: The investigation resulted in the conviction and jailing of an Assistant Attorney General, Webster Hubbell. Hubbell was a former partner with Hillary Clinton at the Rose law firm. Although he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, he provided no information about illegal activities of others under investigation. (not that I necessarily claim there was any) In the 9 months between Hubbell’s resignation (in disgrace) from the justice department and his conviction, Hubbell collect over 500,000 in “consulting” fees, the majority of which came from one Mr James Riady, an Indonesian financier and frequent Lincoln Bedroom “Guest.” (Riady has a multibillion dollar net worth, and numerous business dealings in China). To this day, it is unclear what services were provided, or exactly how many hours were worked. The investigation led to the conviction of a sitting governor, Jim Guy Tucker, on the whitewater charges of fraud and conspiracy, and also tax evasion at Cable TV company he used to run. Tucker escaped longer jail time because of cancer related severe ill health. This prevented Kenn Starr from pressing further charges in order to gain cooperation. Since then Tucker’s health has returned. Now the man from Arkansas is continuing his cable TV career by starting a new Cable TV company in the logical location of Jakarta, Indonesia. Fortuitously, a local businessman by the name of James Riady had agreed to fund the whole venture. The company has yet to turn a profit, but already Tucker is quite wealthy. A separate fundraising investigation led to one Mr John Huang. While employed as a fundraiser at the Democratic National committee, Mr Huang raised 3 million dollars. Over half of it had to be returned, because it had been channeled from foreign sources. For a majority of the money, the actual foreign sources were never determined. Previously to working at the DNC, Haung was a high level Commerce Department official. There he oversaw sensitive negotiations concerning trade in Asia. He also held a top secret security clearance. While at the commerce department Huang made numerous visits to the Chinese and Indonesian Embassies, for personal reasons. While at work, phone records show he also made over 250 calls to the offices of his former employer, the Lippo group. The Lippo group is run by an Indonesian financier, one Mr James Riady. There’s more, but I won’t go on. The point is that all these “right wing nuts” are really not insane, as many would like to believe. There are many bad eggs, but that shouldn’t distract from the stink coming out of the Clinton White House.
