Linux is a Finnish success story
I think the idea of "open-source" behind Linux makes Linux successful. Anyone can create an Unix core on PC easily. But it is just about the fact that the guy wants to try out and so do his followers. It is enough as an OS alternative that makes it a potential threat to Microsoft. Just think of the story as an analogy in balance of power. Microsoft is getting majority shares in the software industry, and anyone who is competing with MS hates their monopoly power. Linux or Netscape as a minority comes in and threatens the majority, which is Microsoft. Gate is panicking and getting pissed off, and starting to copy Netscape Browser and Java stuff. The majority tries to stifle competition by excluding the minority software, like Netscape Browser, into their Windows. Now here comes the government steps in and stops the practice of monopoly power by the majority. Well, pretty good analogy, isn't it ?
