Chipmaking Machine Global Sales Soar 93.5% In July
Monday, September 25, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Global sales of semiconductor production machines surged 93.5% year on year in July to 4.44 billion dollars, according to data released by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan, the Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International and SEMI Japan.

Though the figure represents a rise for the 13th consecutive month, the rate of growth narrowed by 28.6 percentage points from June.

By region, the area categorized as "others," which includes Singapore, saw the sharpest increase at 189.9%. South Korea followed with a 143.4% jump, Europe was up 111.9% and Taiwan 107.6%. In contrast, North America saw a much slower rise of 63%, down 66.3 percentage points from June, while Japan was up 54.1%, down 20 percentage points on the previous month. The figure for Taiwan was down 47.1 percentage points.

A slowdown in personal computer sales in the U.S. and sluggish growth in cell phone shipments are now casting a shadow over the outlook for chip prices.
