NEC To Invest In U.S. To Boost Net Equipment Chip Ops

Sunday, September 24, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--NEC Corp. (6701) plans to expand its business of making semiconductors for use in routers and other Net equipment, company sources told The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Sunday. The company hopes to cash in on the Net equipment chip market, which is expected to grow to 1 trillion yen by 2003.

Routers are indispensable for the functioning of the Internet.

The high-tech giant will invest some 6 billion yen over the next three years to set up design centers in California's Silicon Valley as part of an integrated system capable of quickly supplying semiconductor products.

Such a system would incorporate all steps, from development through to sales. NEC will actively seek orders from major telecom equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc.

NEC aims for 100 billion yen in sales from the wired communications chip business in fiscal 2003.

The company plans to have hired 60 engineers in the U.S. by the end of this week, and will dispatch development team leaders and operations chiefs from Japan.

DELL has Linux workstations.
Can't be many. No category for Linux in WS's.
If Linux is included in the Unix category, IDC's "other" shows only 9,000 units in Q2. Do you have any idea how many they ship?
