Richard, "it is the economy, stupid." It is all about dollars and cents in the USA.

This is why Gore will win.

Bush, Gore Spar Over Oil Reserve

Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000
George W. Bush and Al Gore traded barbs Friday over the Clinton administration's decision to tap America's emergency oil reserve.
Republican Texas Gov. Bush accused the White House of trying to help Democrat Vice President Gore win the Nov. 7 presidential election by trying to keep heating oil prices down.

"It's a bad idea because the Strategic Petroleum Reserve needs to be used in case of war or a major disruption,'' Bush said in Tampa, Fla.

"I believe that the vice president has made this decision with the president's support to achieve short-term political gain,'' he said, according to the Associated Press.

Ask, and Ye Shall Receive

Gore, campaigning in Vanport, Pa., promised homeowners Friday he would fight to cut oil prices for them. He urged that 30 million to 35 million barrels be released from the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve – just before the Clinton administration ordered precisely that.

Republicans said it was no coincidence.

Bush's running mate, Dick Cheney, who was the defense secretary during the Gulf War, called it "an expedient, crass political move.''

Gore avoided comment on the oil release after it was announced, the AP reported.
