If he had said "I have never lied" that would include every thing that he has said or done. Like you said "it's right there" He stated it in the present tense and until you clarify what the starting point is, I think you are misreading his statement. Why not ask the question "have you ever lied?" or "is there a specific timeframe when this (never lying) began" Once answered, your statements would have more meaning.
