Nearly Two Million Mice Get Chop for Bounty

HANOI (Reuters) - Citizens of Hanoi have killed about 1.7
million mice this year in an officially inspired crackdown aimed
at controlling burgeoning numbers of the creatures, official
media reported Monday.

The official Vietnam News newspaper said the number killed
was more than double that in the same period last year and the
state had paid out 377 million dong ($27,000) in rewards.

Citizens can claim about 200 dong for every tail they hand
in to local authorities. The paper said some individuals had
netted as much as 2-3 million dong ($140-$220)
Authorities have also been encouraging people to keep cats.

One commune had promised villagers $2.50 for each cat they took
in and now had more than 500, the paper said.
