<font color=darkgreen>AMD Launches Worldwide 'AMD Assured' Motherboard Program to Simplify Design Process for PC System Builders
-- Gigabyte, Micro-Star motherboards first to qualify for the testing program --
PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2000-- AMD today announced a new worldwide program designed to help ensure availability of reliable, high quality motherboards for AMD Athlon(TM) and AMD Duron(TM) processor-based computers.

The AMD Assured Program, formally announced at the Fall System Builder Summit in Phoenix, Arizona, is intended to help builders of AMD Athlon and AMD Duron processor-based systems identify motherboards which have passed AMD's testing criteria.

Under the program, motherboards must pass extensive electrical and compatibility testing. In addition, the motherboard manufacturer must agree to maintain a reasonable supply of the approved boards. Once they have passed the program tests, program-approved motherboards will qualify only so long as the board's design or components are not altered. If the motherboard manufacturer makes such changes, the board must be resubmitted to AMD for evaluation and such additional testing as AMD deems appropriate in order to continue to be designated as a program-qualified board.

``The AMD Assured program is another example of AMD working with its customers and partners to bring about a complete, stable PC platform,'' said David Somo, AMD vice president of marketing. ``With this new program, system builders and VARs can build AMD Athlon and AMD Duron processor-based systems with the confidence that they are using quality motherboards that meet the testing standards specified by the AMD Assured program.''

The AMD Assured Program is open to motherboard manufacturers around the world. To date, motherboard manufacturers Gigabyte Technology and MSI Inc. have each qualified a motherboard for the AMD Assured Program. Each motherboard that is qualified through the AMD Assured Program will receive a specific AMD Assured model number.

The AMD Assured program is an extension of AMD's current practice of verifying and recommending a collection of motherboards for use with its diverse family of microprocessors. (For a list of recommended motherboards for AMD processors, please go to amd.com. AMD plans to continue recommending motherboards in addition to operating the AMD Assured program.

The AMD Assured program's electrical and compatibility testing is extensive, and includes EMI scanning and standard benchmarking. Each board is tested to the Microsoft® WHQL and Novell standards, and must pass tests on a variety of standard corporate suites including Microsoft® Office 2000 and Corel Office 2000, as well as operating system testing on Microsoft Windows® 98, Windows NT®, Windows 2000, Santa Cruz Operation (SCO), Unix, Linux, Solaris and BeOS. In the future, AMD may perform additional testing on applications such as AutoDesk, AutoCAD 2000, Adobe PhotoShop 5.5, Adobe Illustrator 8, Visual C++ 6.0, Visual Basic 6.0 and Borland Turbo C++.

``Gigabyte is proud to be one of the original participants in the AMD Assured Program,'' said Jack Ko, Gigabyte vice president of Worldwide Sales & Marketing. ``By submitting our motherboards to AMD for testing, we are showing our commitment to providing the market with reliable, compatible and readily available motherboards.''

``We think AMD is doing the right thing by undertaking a program to raise standards for motherboards used in AMD processor-based systems,'' Calvin Wu, president of MSI Computer Corp. ``With our AMD Assured program-qualified motherboard, system builders can build MSI motherboard-based systems with confidence knowing that they have passed AMD's rigorous testing procedures.''

For more information about the AMD Assured Program, including a list of motherboards that have met the ``AMD Assured'' program requirements, please go to amd.com.

This is definitely a great news, besides the k6-2e+ & k6-3e+ news. I'm surprised to see k6-3e+ all the way up to 550MHz.

Milo - RE: "AMD Introduces Powerful and Power Friendly AMD-K6-2E+, AMD-K6-IIIE+ Embedded Processors
Low-power Usage Processors Feature Innovative AMD PowerNow! Technology"

This press release is basically an indication that the K6-2+ has seen its last days in a PC. Maybe AMD can get it up to 575 and 600MHz for the holiday season, but that's all folks.

In other words, AMD's K6 family of microprocessors has served its last days in duty.

They had quite a run, especially at the peak in the second half of 1998 and beginning of 1999 when the K6-2 dominated retail, but like watching a roller coaster there were downs for each up.

It revolutionized the PC industry and still never made a lot of money, but it got AMD to Athlon.

milo or anyone - do these embedded versions of the K6-2+ and K6-3+ by definition run without fans?

Also, how come I can't find any K6-2+ laptops. I see some stores advertising and displaying Compaq 533 MHz K6-2 laptops, but there's nothing on display claiming either PowerNow or K6-2+, so I assume these are the old K6-2's

EAGLE WIRELESS INTERNATIONAL INC ("EAG-ABHDQX")
ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES INC ("AMD-BHDNPQX;AMOD-Z")
- New AMD Embedded Processors to Power Most Advanced Eagle
- Wireless Convergent Set-top Boxes

"Eagle's Video-On-Demand Set-Top Box To Demonstrate New AMD-K6'-IIIE+
Processor in AMD Booth at Embedded Systems Conference"

Eagle Wireless International, together with Advanced Micro Devices,
Inc., is debuting AMD's latest embedded processor line in Eagle's most
advanced Convergent Set-Top Box (CSTB), the Webflyer 500 Series, during the
Embedded Systems Conference in the San Jose Convention Center (AMD Booth
#1328) in San Jose, California, September 26 - 28, 2000. The advanced
Webflyer 500 Series utilizes the new AMD-K6' IIIE+ processor and will be
demonstrating its quality streaming video capabilities. According to Dr. H.
Dean Cubley, President and CEO of Eagle Wireless, "The exceptional
high-performance and efficient power consumption of the AMD-K6-IIIE+
processor makes it ideal for the multimedia functions of Eagle's most
advanced CSTBs."
Dr. Cubley went on to note that Eagle has been collaborating with AMD
over the past several months to beta test the new processor line. "Because
the advanced multimedia functions of our premium CSTBs require much more
processing capability than the typical STB or conventional single-function
Internet appliance," says Cubley, "and because AMD's new processor offers
high performance and low power consumption, Eagle plans to use the new
AMD-K6'-IIIE+ processors exclusively in our high-end 500 Series Convergent
Set-Top-Box."
Eagle's Webflyer 500 Series streams MPEG2 and MPEG4 video through
broadband DSL systems, digital cable systems and Ethernet networks. Service
providers will be able to deliver true video-on-demand content at the
user's request, similar to other pay-per-view-services. Now, end users who
use true video-on-demand services will be able to view programs whenever
they choose rather than waiting for them to be scheduled. AMD's processor
powers Eagle's Convergent Set-Top Box and allows the Webflyer 500 Series to
stream video, play DVDs and operate 3D games, all in one device.
Eagle's Director of Sales & Marketing for the Convergent Multimedia
Products, John Nagel, noted, "AMD's ability to pack more performance into
the same package and reduce the power consumption will improve
functionality in Eagle's multimedia product line. The enhanced
implementation of AMD's 3DNow! instruction set and onboard cache improves
the multimedia performance and graphics experience for our end user. The
major reduction in power allows the Webflyer to run cooler, with
essentially no fan noise, and improves overall reliability. Eagle is
extremely pleased to have been selected by AMD to trial run their newest
products. This allows Eagle to stay on the advancing edge of the multimedia
appliance market."
"The video-on-demand features (streaming video) of Eagle's Webflyer
serve as an excellent host for AMD's 3DNow! and AMD PowerNow!
technologies. The high-end, multimedia set-top box market is expected to
expand rapidly as bandwidth for the Internet increases and digital
interactive TV applications begin to emerge, and this has the potential to
become a very important market for AMD's x86 embedded processor line," said
Paul Smith, product and business marketing manager with AMD's Embedded
Processors Division.
Eagle Wireless International, Inc. and its subsidiaries are leading
suppliers of broadband wired and wireless equipment and services for the
Internet, multimedia set-top boxes, one- and two-way wireless messaging,
specialized mobile radio (SMR), remote data acquisition and meter reading,
and integrated wired and wireless convergence product markets. The company
is headquartered in League City, Texas, near the NASA Johnson Space Center,
south of Houston. Further news updates on Eagle and its products are
