Foundry Networks Showcases High-Performance Metropolitan Optical Network
Solution to Carriers and Service Providers

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
NetWorld Interop Atlanta 2000

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2000--

Industry Leader Demonstrates Complete Optical Interoperability
for Gigabit Ethernet and Packet Over SONET Connectivity at
NetWorld+InterOp Atlanta

Foundry Networks(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a leader in
high-performance, end-to-end switching and routing products, today
announced the successful completion of interoperability testing for
both Packet Over SONET (POS) and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces between
Foundry's NetIron(TM) Internet backbone routers and CIENA's MultiWave
Metro(TM) intelligent optical transport systems. Foundry and CIENA
will be demonstrating interoperability at NetWorld+InterOp in Atlanta
from Sept. 26-28, 2000 at Foundry's booth no. 7323.
Interoperability between CIENA and Foundry products sets the
foundation for an Intelligent Optical Internet on which new, dynamic
optical services are created and seamlessly delivered.
Interoperability will be demonstrated with transmission of IP traffic
across Gigabit Ethernet and Packet Over SONET (POS) formats. Foundry
continues to lead the market with advanced technologies for the
next-generation Internet, and this interoperability will give service
providers the confidence that Foundry's and CIENA's products work
seamlessly to create service-differentiating, high-speed, advanced
optical networks.
"Interoperability between Foundry's NetIron Internet backbone
routers and intelligent optical transport gear, such as CIENA's
MultiWave Metro, meets the high-capacity demands of carriers and large
service providers to deliver high-performance optical networks for
large-scale Metropolitan network services and co-location facilities,"
said Bobby Johnson, president and CEO of Foundry Networks.
"Blending advanced Layer 1 optical networking solutions, along
with Foundry's robust Layer 2 to 7 product offerings, carriers and
service providers can now deploy high-performance, highly available
IP-to-optics network infrastructures that offer a complete set of
fault-tolerant multi-tiered services," added Johnson.
Foundry's NetIron Internet backbone router is the highest
performance router for the Internet core that delivers switching
capacity of up to 480 Gbps and IP forwarding throughput of up to
172,000,000 packets per second. Using the NetIron Internet backbone
router's robust suite of IP routing protocols, and its support for
over two million BGP4 routes and over 200 peers, carriers can build
large-scale IP networks.
"Our vision of an Intelligent Optical Internet begins with a
seamless, interoperable network of high-capacity routers, transport
systems, optical switches and software that can dynamically
self-provision any amount of bandwidth anytime according to immediate
customer needs," said Patrick Nettles, president and CEO of CIENA.
"Seamless interoperability between the routing and transport equipment
in the network, as demonstrated here with Foundry, is a critical step
toward the next-generation optical IP network."
