ADVISORY/'Storage + Optical Networking = The Content Big Bang'
Mike Ruettgers, CEO of EMC, to Keynote at Networld+Interop 2000 Atlanta September 26
(BUSINESS WIRE)--
As a recent headline from Money.com put it: ``CEO Mike Ruettgers is the King of Data Storage.'' Mike has built EMC into one of the most powerful high-tech franchises in the world-$7 billion in sales, more than $1 billion in net income, and some 20,000 employees in 50 countries. In 1998 BusinessWeek named Mike one of the ``World's Top 25 Executives.'' Worth magazine has named Mike to its list of the 50 Best CEOs in America-twice.

As a follow-up to Mr. Ruettgers' N+I keynote, EMC will host a live Internet chat session focusing on the rapid emergence of optical networking and its impact on enterprise storage networking. Jim Rothnie, EMC's Senior Vice President of Product Management, will field questions and comments over the net. You can join the chat in the EMC booth at N+I or through any Internet connection.

I've always wondered how EMC developed the technology behind the Database Tuner, an optional module in the ControlCenter. It also looks like ControlCenter is going to get yet another module with Interpoint. If an increasingly self-tuning Symmetrix can squeeze out 30% to 40% more performance out of an Oracle Database then that will do wonders for ERP, which is the type of enterprise-wide app that thrives in high-availability environments. No wonder IBM Software is pouring $200 million into a crash program to develop more database tools.

The Precise/EMC relationship was formed in 1998 when a joint development project resulted in an OEM arrangement through which EMC began reselling Precise's technology in its product offerings. Subsequently, EMC has taken an investment position in Precise [PRSE].........

.....Precise/Interpoint is a unique solution for optimizing the performance of ERP applications including Oracle Applications and SAP R/3, running in an Oracle environment. Precise/Interpoint monitors the Oracle database, the database server, and the ERP application and correlates the results to detect system and application based bottlenecks, thereby significantly reducing the time spent identifying the sources of performance degradation. Using Precise/Interpoint, performance engineers can identify which ERP entities (e.g., transactions, users) are consuming the most resources. They can also drill down from the Oracle database to identify the problematic SQL statements, transactions, and database objects. The engineers can then track these problematic entities back to their points of origin within the ERP environment--to the specific ERP users, transactions, screens, reports, or user customizations and extensions. By optimizing the way ERP applications access the Oracle databases, Precise/ Interpoint integrated with DBTuner will maximize the end-to-end management and performance of the entire Oracle environment and help organizations meet their business needs.

Another vendor which has been successful selling into the EMC installed base is Computer Network Technology (CMNT). SRDF over IP, which was introduced earlier this year, was a multi-year joint project between CMNT and EMC. More from their 9/21/2000 SPO prospectus:

We have established a relationship with EMC for remote disk mirroring applications. This existing relationship was recently enhanced by an agreement to provide an exclusive package of remote disk mirroring hardware, software and implementation service. We are offering an exclusive package of our hardware, software and implementation services to EMC's customers. Together with EMC, we offer complementary professional services and linked customer support organizations. We work with EMC to provide our mutual customers with timely, effective service. For the six months ended July 31, 2000, sales of our storage networking products to customers using EMC's disk mirroring systems accounted for 26% of our total product revenue. In the year ended December 31, 1999, sales of our storage networking products to customers using EMC's disk mirroring systems accounted for 35% of our total product revenue. We also market our remote disk mirroring applications with other vendors, including Hitachi Data Systems and IBM.......
