3G developers look to Japan for handsets

OXFORD, United Kingdom—As the major third-generation (3G) infrastructure developers announce their first contract awards, news is creeping out that, while European 3G networks have target launch dates of late 2001/early 2002, the handsets will mostly come from Japanese manufacturers.
Ericsson and Alcatel, both aggressive players in the handset business, have admitted concluding deals with Matsushita (Panasonic) and Fujitsu respectively for early delivery of 3G handsets. Panasonic, which claims a 5.5-percent share of the world’s handset market, is considering building a second plant in Europe if demand continues on its present curve. The company already has a handset factory in the United Kingdom with an annual capacity of 10 million units.

3G handsets do represent a formidable challenge for the design engineers. To enable these cell phones to roam and take advantage of the state of evolution of a particular network, they will need to support 3G, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and multiband GSM frequencies to enable the user to travel internationally, and still access voice, data and multimedia services. The Japanese handset manufacturers are being selected by the likes of Ericsson and Alcatel, because of their experience with multimedia cell phones for use with i-mode, and local Japanese operators will be the first in the world to deploy commercial 3G services.
