Capellas Outlines Compaq's Vision for New Era in
Internet Computing

Compaq Launching New Print and Television Ads in Support

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:
CPQ) President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Capellas today said computing
is moving into a new "Pervasive Information Era" driven by customer demand for
massive amounts of information "anytime, anywhere" through a variety of wireless
and broadband devices.

Speaking at the company's annual two-day meeting of industry analysts here,
Capellas emphasized that Compaq is redefining the way the Internet is being used
by dramatically enhancing the customer Internet experience with leading-edge
access devices, by building the business critical Internet infrastructure and by
working with the best solution partners.

In addition, he said the company is launching a new brand campaign including print
and television advertising worldwide over the next coming months touting Compaq's
dedication to "Inspiration Technology." The first print ads ran today in The Wall
Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today and the first television ad will run
tonight during ABC's Monday Night Football. Magazine and Internet placements will
begin later this month.

"Our mission is to transform the customer experience by leveraging Compaq's
position as a unifying force across the Internet," Capellas said. "We believe that
people enabled by great technology can achieve great things."

Pervasive Information Era

Capellas explained that the world is moving to the "Pervasive Information Era" where
billions of Internet devices will access information from highly scaleable, available,
and "always on" secure networks. The data available in the network infrastructure
will meet with the access devices at the network edge to provide users information
that will significantly increase knowledge and support decision-making.

"Compaq's strategy is not just about devices or building beige boxes," Capellas
said, "It is about developing solutions that utilize a variety of devices and wireless
and broadband communications technologies to seamlessly and securely link with
data rich servers and storage. Our customers provide everything from the most
critical business information to the information that students need for their high
school assignments.

"The concept of the network edge is simple," Capellas continued. "It is where
access meets infrastructure to deliver pervasive, personalized, content, services
and commerce. It melds the applications, platforms and the content on the
infrastructure side with the broadband appliances and wireless devices on the
access side. The world is moving to pervasive information and the action is at the
network edge. Compaq is uniquely positioned to meet the demands of this new
era."

The Compaq CEO maintained that the technology industry has moved through a
number of standardizations from the Mainframe Era, to Client/Server, and now to
the "Pervasive Information Era." He said this new era will be fueled by the growth of
the wireless and broadband Internet services that will produce more than 1 billion
wireless Internet users by 2005.

Business Critical Infrastructure

Capellas told analysts that it is Compaq's strategy to build the business critical
Internet infrastructure through a combination of leadership platforms, best-in-class
partnerships and global professional and services.

"Anytime, anywhere computing requires a secure, scaleable, 24x7 infrastructure
that can handle vast amounts of data," Capellas explained. "The new economy
demands that information is readily available that can change business models in
real time."

The integrated solutions include server platforms that scale up with high
performance transaction engines and scale out with leading industry-standard
Internet applications servers, clusters and appliances. Both are integrated with
industry-leading storage products.

Compaq's "best-in-class" partnerships will concentrate on the leaders in eBusiness
applications, content and service providers, eBusiness platforms and networking
and wireless, he said.

"Nobody can do it alone. Success in the Internet Age is dependent on selecting the
right partners," Capellas said. "But you have to be selective. To partner with
everyone, is to partner with no one."

Capellas emphasized that Compaq's Global Services will be key to the company's
success as Professional Services will work with on architecture design and
solutions integration while the Customer Services group will focus on continuous
operations support. "Compaq has 40,000 service professionals who are dedicated
to ensuring our customers' success," he said.

Redefining Internet Access

On the access side, Capellas said Compaq will continue to redefine the Internet
experience by providing users with leading general purpose PCs, innovative Internet
access devices and integrated wireless and broadband technologies, as well as
integrated content and services from Compaq's worldwide network of partners.
Simplicity will be a hallmark.

"Clearly, Compaq has led the way in making the Internet easily accessible through
commercial and consumer devices," Capellas said. "Whether it is our more
traditional PC offerings, or our iPAQ family that includes the iPAQ Pocket PC, net
appliances and the iPAQ Blackberry, we are striving to get people connected
whenever they want, wherever they are."

New Advertising and Brand

Compaq's new brand and advertising campaign will center on the new company
tagline "Inspiration Technology" and a new look in color and typeface. The ads were
developed with the help of FCB Worldwide.

"We are organizing behind the Compaq brand," said Douglas Fox, Compaq's senior
vice president for marketing and strategy. "The company will speak in one,
consistent voice, from advertising, to employee communications, to analyst and
public relations that clearly differentiate the company's role in providing
industry-leading Internet infrastructure and access.

"We are building a bond of trust with our customers -- the trust between what we
promise and what is expected of us," he continued. "We chose Inspiration
Technology to represent Compaq's brand essence and approach -- a departure from
the complexity of traditional IT to a single-minded focus on giving customers simpler
access to its empowering benefits. Compaq goes beyond the limits of information
technology to the boundless, liberating possibilities of Inspiration Technology.
Compaq develops the ingenious technology and solutions that enable a person to
better pursue what inspires them."
