What's the purpose of a quiet period? Other companies spoke out last week to blunt the effect of Intel's news! Why is it that AMD cannot comment during quiet but otherwise painful periods? Inquiring shareholders want to know.

Al,

The quiet period is a bit of a misnomer. Companies have given the impression that they will not release press releases nor answer questions during the period right before earnings. Remember its this period (right before earnings) when investors become the most anxious and besiege companies with their concerns. By using the term 'quiet period' in the past, companies have discouraged investors from contacting them.

However the truth is is that companies must release immediately to the public at any time of the year information of a material nature that may move their stock.....this is in compliance with SEC regulations. Consequently, investors are becoming less and less respectful of the 'quiet period' excuse.
