Enough with Hollywood's monopoly

I've had it with movie studios and record companies reflexively fighting any technology they think will dilute their profits....


...Hollywood has a very sweet deal. If you're Microsoft standardizing things to avoid operating system headaches, you're a dangerous monopolist. But if you're a movie studio or record company, with unctuous lawyers and lobbyists, and friends at the Democratic Leadership Council, you can have a real honest-to-goodness monopoly and charge whatever you want. If multiple companies offered the same popular movie or CD, competition would drive the prices down. But that's not how the system works. You don't like it? Go pound sand.

On another note, regarding advertising, Tivo, and ReplayTV. Watch for product placement to become much more prevalent in your favorite TV shows. You may be able to skip the Coke commercial, but you won't want to skip past George Clooney saving a little girl while having a coke and a smile. To the extreme, many actors will be be paid so well, and do so many commercial appearances, they will become instantly recognizeable with a product. No matter what TV show you see Wilford Brimley in, you will think of Quaker Oats. As an advertiser you just have to hope he doesn't die of Cancer, or get caught with a hooker...

Thread- In their Q101 CC IFCI says ATT moved from their biggest customer to about zero in Q101. The reverberations from the truce T called on capex was massive! Not just to companies that counted on ATT directly as their biggest customers, but others as well.

IFCI has said LD/Core spending has gone into the toilet and will remain there for a few years. And as I was guessing, IFCI has said spending has moved into the metro/CO areas. Has to be because broadband access continues on it's steady, relatively slow pace. So there is at least one B&B company that seems to correlate with what I think will occur next. It's amazing how quickly the core spending has simply come to a dramatic halt.

Regarding IFCI specifically, they did their normal, "We have 10 patents pending on our Aerocomm product and we have dumped a ton of money into it with zero sales...blah, blah, blah." It's too bad they have been saying the same stuff for years and no one believe them anymore.

What I do find pretty impressive is their ability to keep their top line on a growth track in spite of the telecom disaster. But they always seem to fumble the ball again and again on the bottom line. The excuses just get tiring after awhile as reflected in their stock price. At least they are getting out of the used equipment business. But anyone with any sense could have told them to get rid of that years ago. It's a niche business not suited for a company of over 2,000 employees. Duh.

IFCI appears to be wanting to go head to head with another B&B player we have discussed here, Wireless Facilities(sym:WFII). Whether or not they are going to be successful, remains to be seen. I find it interesting one of the more steady B&B companies, Dycom (sym:DYCOM) continues to stay out of the wireless business due to low margins.

What's scary is IFCI seems to want to bet their company on their wireless patent pending product(Aerocomm) to leverage their way into the mobile wireless SPs business. Something they've gotten zero revenues out of so far. Their CEO now claims this zero revenue was somewhat deliberate (I never heard that in the past CCs) as their product was not ready, but apparently is ready enough now to create a sales team to sell it.

Oh well, since I listened to the CC I just wanted to throw in some B&B comments about the shift in spending to metro/access and thought I would toss in company specific info too. -MikeM(From Florida)
