Thus, the combination of the market caps can be used as a measuring stick against the size of the entire PDA market. I took a cheap shot by adding SanDisk into the mix. The point I wished to make is that there are pure-plays in the PDA arena and these include flash memory manufacturers as you mentioned in the recent Technology Investor review. My particular bias is for ultra-high density flash memory manufacturers that fill the demand for data storage, rather than low density flash manufacturers, such as SSTI, that supply embedded chips for code storage. The simple reason is that a PDA or cellphone or like device may require an embedded flash chip to function, but consumers could be encouraged to purchase multiple removable flash cards for a single device. Thus, attach rates for flash cards could lead to multiple (repeat sales) to end-users rather than a single sale to the OEM. Lower density embedded flash applications will reflect the breadth of the product introductions and are not limited to PDA sales. With additional functionality being added to cellphones, PDA's and hybrids of these devices (as mentioned last night by Cheeky Kid) the demand for high flash memory storage products will increase as indicated by this recent Intel release...biz.yahoo.com SanDisk and its partner, Toshiba, announced after hours yesterday that they have successfully created a single 512Mbit flash chip which is capable of storing 64 megabytes of data. A stack of two chips is now capable of providing 128 megabytes of storage.Message 14454124 I see flash memory as the equivalent of a hard drive/Zip drive/CD-ROM/floppy in portable electronics devices all rolled into one. SanDisk is, IMHO, the best pure-play in leading-edge flash storage for those interested in a concentrated investment in the market serving mobile electronics devices.
