Matsushita to Provide 1 Million Set-Top Boxes to AT&T

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Japanese electronics giant Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (6752.T) said on Tuesday it agreed to provide 1 million set-top boxes to customers of AT&T Broadband, the entertainment business of AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news), over the next three years.

Through the cable set-tops, the companies expect to introduce new broadband video, voice and data services, they said in a statement.

Matsushita, based in Secaucus, N.J. and known in America for its Panasonic brand, said it will equip the boxes with high-speed cable modems, enabling such services as Web-browsing, e-mail and interactive shopping and banking.

Shares of AT&T closed at $28-13/16 in New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) trading on Monday.

Matsushita's American Depositary Receipts closed at $264 on the NYSE Monday.
