If the situation were reversed, and Intel was the one trying to catch up to AMD in the mobile market, would you call that "absurd" as well?

Absolutely. However, I think the key point to consider is that Intel is dependent on this monopoly pricing power in both server and laptop chips to maintain their high ASPs. AMD is not. I would guess that over half of Intel's profits come from these two areas. If AMD puts out competitive products in these two areas, prices will fall dramatically over time to competitive levels as in the desktop area. That would be a disaster for Intel while at the same time a god send for AMD.
