Palm Professor: An introduction
Larry Becker, lbecker@maccentral.com
Contributing Editor and Columnist
September 25, 2000, 1:30 pm ET

This column is new to MacCentral so please grant me this first installment to introduce myself and my intentions for my regular weekly Palm Professor "How-To" column.

My name is Larry Becker and I love my trusty little handheld computer as much as I loved my first Mac.

Over the years there have been market studies and expert opinions all about why Mac users are so loyal and how their devotion to a computer goes beyond what PC makers can achieve. I'm not sure I've ever really heard a decent explanation of the magic formula but that doesn't keep me from recognizing it when it comes along again, even though it's in a new package -- in my opinion Palm has done it.

Inspired by my trusty Mac I have done my best to teach users how to get the most from their computers. This evolved from one-on-one training to my current position as Web Editor for MacToday Magazine, writer for Photoshop User Magazine and even as a Web Marketing instructor on staff at the University of South Florida, Tampa.

I now find myself even more inspired by a little computer I carry in my pocket ... my Palm.

In fact, I was so inspired by the Palm OS that I started a business based on teaching people how to get the most from their Palm device. My training company allows me to discuss all aspects of Palm use with novices and experts alike. This column will come from my experiences as a Palm trainer and devoted user.

"Palm Professor" will be based on the Palm platform but it won't necessarily focus on news or any single manufacturer or model. These articles are intended for users of Palms, Visors and even Sony's new offering, the CLIE. And the content will address what your needs as Palm OS users are. Your feedback will drive topics each week and your suggestions may even appear in print.

As a devoted Mac user, you can expect an occasional column on Palms as they relate to Macs. Because I teach Palm productivity you will find many of my columns dedicated to using your Palm in the most
effective way possible. People always love learning new tips and tricks so that will be a regular feature too.

You can expect this column to focus on business applications and navigating the Palm OS -- everything from beginner to expert. And finally this column will certainly cover one of my favorite Palm topics -- gadgets for Palms.

For the most part you can expect "How-To" type training requested by the readers and hopefully some thoughtful, creative solutions. So please let me know what your Palm challenges are and I'll keep you posted on what's going on out there as Palm handhelds continue to explode and gain traction in the main-stream business world.
