Microsoft enters B2B, B2C server market
TEL AVIV, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Tuesday it plans to go head-to-head with Sun Microsystems (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news), IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) and Oracle (NasdaqNM:ORCL - news) by developing a PC-based line of servers that will enable businesses to power and manage their Internet commerce.

``We're moving from the PC-centric view of the world to the Internet environment,'' Microsoft senior vice president Jean-Philippe Courtois told Reuters at the start of this week's Comdex Israel. ``But we are not getting rid of our investment in PCs -- there are 400 million users of Windows.''

Courtois, president of Microsoft in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the servers would be based on the new Windows 2000 operating system and would allow the exchange of information for business from their websites to PCs, mobile phones, palm-type computers and other devices.

They would be both for business to business (B2B) and business to customer (B2C), he said, adding that they would be more affordable than servers offered by competitors.

``It's the biggest bet for the company for the next five to 10 years,'' Courtois said. ``Our '.net' strategy is to really facilitate the Internet generation, empowering users to access information from anywhere, anytime and on any device.''
