Semi OT to EMC-ers: Q re past EMC convertible issues

I hold ADI, which just announced a convertible issue, a first for the company AFAIK. As an EMC shareholder (I simply plan to hold "forever"), I know EMC has issued convertible debt with much success. My question for the smart apples on this EMC thread is: what did EMC use the proceeds from the convertible issue for: acquisitions? and if yes, why did they not opt to use stock for those acquisitions instead of cash proceeds from convertible debt. I do not recollect specifics how EMC utilized the convertible proceeds -- TIA for any comments.
