mishedlo,

I am researching technical issues that may or may not cause DDR to be more expensive than people think,

One of the areas worth looking at is the use of registers on the address lines of DDR DIMMs and CMOS switches on the data lines. (Not only do these components increase the cost, but also the latency.) Another issue is clock distribution - there are special clock drivers with multiple outputs to help overcome clock loading problems. The TI web site is a good place to look for components that are needed to make DDR work in large memory configurations. I have not seen anyone suggest that DDR is useable with more than two or three DIMMs without buffering and/or switching. Every DDR motherboard photograph I have seen shows large numbers of termination resistors.

Another likely cost adder is the extra shielding to overcome radio frequency emissions.
