AMD's 29K series "bit slice" processors were used in early mainframes and supercomputers - and AMD made money on them. Intel made RAM and calculator chips until they were anointed by IBM as the favored microprocessor source.

Intel did a great job of executing after it was handed that gift through a combination of Justice department pressure and IBM shortsightedness - but don't get too carried away about which company got the big break, and which company has historically been more performance oriented and has made it on its own.
