France Telecom to Build American Fiber Network

NEW YORK (Reuters) - France Telecom (FTE.PA) said Tuesday it will invest $200 million to build a 15,000-mile fiber optics network connecting 28 major cities in North America by the end of 2001.

The network will be connected to France Telecom's pan-European backbone network, opened in October 1999, with international submarine cables.

The network will meet the needs of the entire France Telecom group, especially for capacity for the fast-growing Internet traffic between the United States and Europe, the company said. Global One, Paris-based France Telecom's subsidiary with a U.S. operator's license, will use this transmission backbone network to further enhance global data and voice services it provides to multinational customers.

France Telecom expects to finalize an agreement shortly with Level 3 Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:LVLT - news) to provide the dark fiber network.

France Telecom has chosen as equipment vendors Alcatel (CGEP.PA) for the DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) equipment, and Nortel Networks Corp. (Toronto:NT.TO - news) (NYSE:NT - news) for the SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) equipment.

It looks like LVLT is now fighting to break above some 27 day moving average resistance here. Have a nice weekend.
