16) ALL tankers are full and headed to the US. None are empty and heading the other way.

2(A) Since it only costs around $1.50 to produce a barrel of oil in Saudi Arabia, that is the correct price for their production.

21. There is a giant "tap" somewhere that is turned up and down on a daily basis to regulate the flow of oil.

Wonderful, JimL! May I be so bold to suggest adding a 21st item to your great list. The 21st item would state "There are only 20 other common misconceptions about the oil business"!

21) Refineries, while running at 96% capacity, can run that way forever w/o maintenance and if OPEC would just sell us the crude refineries could run at 100% capacity and solve this winter's heating oil supply problem.
EDIT I guess that would be #33
OOps, I see JQP covered this one already.

JimL,
OK I've got to get into the act, great list, you'll need an editor soon!

28) If you sit on the price of gold hard enough, no one will notice any inflation, even as they pump $3 per gallon gas into their SUV

[That one's for you big Al G(reenspan not Gore)]

Good List Jim L...

& thank you Mr. Market for the cheeeeeeep ATW & GLBL among others...

Nice turn in the tide today - I still say; that poltics makes for strange bedfellows... watch what the Saudi's do - not what they say...

The Saudi's will do whatever it takes to ram this Oil Crisis up Gore & Lieberman's hinterlands... only a continued "Oil Crisis" will virtually guarantee Bush's election & the Saudi's owe the old Man a big one & a significant factor that no one will address because of its political incorrectness is the fact - that the OPEC powers & Arabs WILL NOT tolerate Liberman in the White House - period.

Oil WILL continue to upside suprise thru the elections... bank on it.

21) When OPEC doesn't produce 100 percent it is called market manipulation. When the US removes oil producing lands from production it is called benefiting the environment.

Re: Oil Industry Misconceptions; Add:

Thousands of wealthy Texans are sitting on their oil reserves waiting on the price to go higher.

Any modern day Geologist can tell you where the untapped oil can be found.

Service stations are making a bundle on these higher gas prices.

Detroit has a mandate from the oil companies to produce gas hawgs.

With tongue in cheek,
