Dear Elmer: Why spend $3000 on a computer when a $10 unit performs the task better? Why use a tactical Nuke when a firecracker can do the job? For the applications Intel is touting (MPEG compression and moving data from one area to another), there currently exists specialized hardware that outruns the P4 (MPEG 2 compression is done real time on a $300 (soon it can be done a a $25 chip) plug in board whereas the P4 cannot do it at more than 10% real time and for data movement, a $1 (if that) DMA chip outruns it). The more apt comparison is a Dragster (P4) against a World Rally Racer (Tbird). In drag races, the P4 might come out ahead (some times substantially), but which one would you use to go to the grocery store? Commuting to work? On a trip from SF to Washington? Most of the time? Remember when Intel touted MMX? That has turned out to be a yawner at best. Intel touted Rambus as the future too. The P4 is Intel trying to make into a DSP. Sorry, that market is capably held by TI, Motorola, et al, for a heck of a lot less money. This market (the General Purpose CPU) does not give much for SP (Single Purpose) CPU designs. We want our CPUs to be like 4x4s (go anywhere) not dragsters (one way or else). Pete
