I noticed the difference in emphasis. It sounds like what's been done so far (shrinking to .16um) was mostly done before Sandisk hooked up with Toshiba. Toshiba was also banging their drum about having been a Flash pioneer. Sandisk's major contribution to the collaboration will be MLC.

Jim,

I fully expected a tailored press release from both camps.
The SanDisk release had more of a collegial undertone
and admitted that SanDisk entered the project mid-stream.

Again, I remain very excited about the synergy of the SanDisk/Toshiba efforts. As Eli emphasized at the annual meeting, both parties bring very complimentary areas of competence to the table and the overlap seems to be small in proportion to the scope of the undertaking.

The true test will be getting Dominion operational by mid-2001. The fact that Toshiba spearheaded the latest developments and the the Yokkaichi fab is the centerpiece may have colored the Toshiba press release somewhat.

I detected a certain level of electricity in the quotes from Sanjay Mehrotra. Recall that the MOU was announced just about 12 months ago and already the efforts are bearing fruit. The fact that SanDisk wrote a press release at all and then released it late in the evening is an indicator (to me) that this is, in fact, a milestone for SanDisk.

Elated,

Aus

Japanese Pride. Japanese mega-Corporations still cannot admit even to themselves they need help. The oligarchial framework is still very much alive in Japan.

I have one word for you: Mitsubishi.

Admitting that you need an alliance with a relatively small American semiconductor company like Sandisk doesn't set too well at home in Nippon.

But just as long as Sandisk gets plenty of product and profit out of this venture, I'm happy.
