steve, your quote refers to realized capital gains.

John's point was that there are plenty of unrealized capital gains that could be realized if Intel wanted to manage earnings.

The performance of the portfolio is irrelevant to the income statement. This is why a lot of analysts like to look at it separately from the core business.

I meant that Intel, or the analysts don't factor investment gains before the quarter starts. How do they necessarily know what they're going to sell, and when? In any case, factored in or not, my point was that you need to meet or exceed the analysts' estimates for a quarter, vs. exceed what was made in the comparable quarter a year ago. Period.
