The big picture is precisely the setting of tone. Franklin Roosevelt was a great leader not so much because of policy, but because he could make the nation braver and more resolute in crisis. Ronald Reagan was a great leader because he gave people a sense of the destiny and greatness of America, and made them want to live up to those things. Bill Clinton has given them thing after thing to live down, and Al Gore seems likely to add to that legacy of cynicism, narcissistic self- absorption, and belittlement.........
