(that is, for example, there > is a PIII 933 MHz Xeon with 256 KB cache. That's what I mean by small cache version). I know I'm not Tenchusatsu, but I believe I can be of assistance. :) I have seen the recent Intel Foster document (which was put on the Intel ftp site for a few hours then whisked away, likely when it was realized that it wasn't supposed to be there), as well as a roadmap that happens to be a few months old (circa April) that covers servers. According to the roadmap, a 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz Foster referred to as "256 iL2" for Dual Processor machines was slated to start existing in early 2001 Q1. A 1.3GHz and 1.4GHz Foster ("512K iL3") is slated for phasing in starting late Q1, as is a 1.4GHz ("1M iL3"). These Fosters with L3 cache support multiprocessing of the sort greater than two-way. On the side, the reasons why they selected DDR SDRAM over DRDRAM were the following issues: "max memory size, volume density and chipkill". Incidentally, I just noticed that this roadmap said that Willamette's clock would be ">=1.5GHz", not "1.5GHz" as I had remembered. Hmmm ... i850 doesn't support PC700? Nor does Colusa? Okay, where was I? The Foster document.... hmmm, predictions that IA-64:IA-32 ratio will be 1:2 in 2003. Regular Foster (that's the no L3 version, I believe) currently slated for early H1. 4-way Itanium expected early to mid 2000H2. 8-way Foster with 1MB L3, 4-way with 1MB L3, 4-way with 512K L3, all slated for H1. i870 (debuting in H2) for the first two, not asterisked for the last . Wow, groovy, i870 to support 64GB DDR SDRAM or DRDRAM. Foster (no L3) cost will be similar to Willamette. Will use Colusa (2000Q4), that's the only chipset available in time for it. BTW, what's this multithreading Jackson Technology? Sounds so familiar.... Says it benefits server style programs and requires little code modification. Aargh, sorry. I didn't intend to write all this. I sorta got carried away here, since I really didn't look at this pdf when I first got it. Apologies to those who already discussed this a few days ago. Hope any of this is helpful. ^_^
