Sometimes the beauty of plane 'ole HTML (or whatever flavor you call it) is the simplicity and the speed in which it loads.

I haven't read the press releases but I can probably guess what they're about. HTML is strictly a presentation language and is no good for data presentation. For B2B systems built from a plethora of hardware and software (IBM, Sun, Microsoft, Oracle, and so on), XML is a great technology for invoking remote API's and exchanging data.

The idea, I imagine, is to create a standard which better enables otherwise incompatible systems to "talk" to one another. If an auto dealer's system needs to order cars from manufacturers who need to order parts from parts factories who need to order raw materials to make parts (and so on), we need to find better ways of integrating these systems and a standard based on XML is probably one of the better ways to do it.

Obviously, this has little (if anything) to do with web browsing. We're not talking about someone getting their ebay pages to load a little quicker, we're talking about TRILLIONS of dollars in transactions being automatically and efficiently handled by a plethora of systems. (God forbid if those are NT machines though!)
