G.,

Almost precisely, except data miners tend not to be quite as scientific. They look at the past; form some hypothesis; then attempt to discover a simple predictor.

Often the fundamental hypothesis is harebrained; or, might that just be the "hypothesizer"? <g> So more and more complexity gets added to their calculations to fit all occurrences in the time studied.

And usually, the work is completely useless as a predictor of anything.

On the other hand, the author might have discovered the secret of predicting markets. And if a pig had a feather up its butt, perhaps it would fly.

BWDIK,
Ian.
