Forgetting the more controversial solutions, there need not
be any world wide energy crisis in the century that begins on January 1, 2001. 1. Natural gas exists in much greater supply than oil and can replace it for energy uses. 2. Hydrogenation of coal is a well known technology. There are many centuries of coal in the earth. Of course $10 a barrel or even $20 a barrel prices for oil will discourage the use of natural gas engines and liquids from the hydrogenation of coal. If the price would really stay at $35 a barrel for a long long time we'd see these alternate solutions appearing everywhere.
