Mango Boy,

Just think of it. The Internet as we now know it gets swamped by queries made by Japanese surfers, as they try to connect to SONY games that are housed in servers in Silicon Alley. 60 Hudson Street in NY City had better bolster their DWDM banks and run some fiber directly to Tokyo, lest we hear the squish of the implosion.

Actually, the Japanese were the first to announce this vision - to run fiber to every home - about twelve years ago.

Their goal was to have strands running into every residence by 2010, if I'm not mistaken. And while they've had many setbacks which tracked pretty closely with their economic problems over the past decade, I guess they're back on course now.. at least from the standpoint of stringing fiber.

I posted, recently, why the Japanese would not consider running fiber deep into neighborhoods in support of xDSL. The claim is that a major problem exists in finding adequate real estate close to residences in which to place the next gen equipment that would support VDSL.

Maybe they get it. That, a fiberized economy is an economy with an advantage. By the way, sometime during the past year I believe it was Sweden who also made this claim. Thanks for the post.
