Unless Cheney is supporting a candidate openly, no one knows his ballot, and therefore his vote influences no one. In the ordinary course of events, his voting pattern would not be noticed, or a matter of public concern, and therefore he would not be any sort of influence. In this particular circumstance, as a transplant from Wyoming who did not have strong local ties, who traveled a lot, and who was asked to vote in numerous referenda, I do not think that his recent voting habits should be viewed as meaningful by anyone, although they have become well publicized. Although I vote in almost all elections, they are not every few months, and I sometimes feel stupid or even guilty because so much of it is flipping a coin. Even when one tries to find out more about local candidates, there is rarely enough material available to make a meaningful distinction between John Smith and Joe Blow for sheriff or orphan's court judge. It is generally better when coming to delegates and state senators, or mayors and county executives, but even then, at that level a lot of the candidates have similar resumes and go out of their way not to say anything controversial, so it is frequently like choosing between Tweedledee and Tweedledum. And the ballot questions are often the worst, because they often involve arcane technical corrections to the state or county charter that I have no real opinion of. So, in the end, I sympathize with Cheney losing interest in excessive referenda, and therefore losing track of most elections in that period........
