I'm not so sure about that. We can identify how many people die from firearms. That number can be counted. But the number of lives saved can't be identified. I'd bet it is pretty large. An example: My first wife once told me of an incident that occurred years ago when she was traveling at night to visit her sister in another state. She stopped late at night at a service station to fill up the tank and get a drink. While at the station, she noticed a guy giving her the eye. After she left, he shortly showed up on her bumper and proceeded to pull alongside and motion her to pull over. And he passed her and slowed down. She was able to get around him and put her car in the middle of the highway so he couldn't pass her again. But then there she was on a deserted highway late at night with a man determined to get her to stop her car. Well, it happened that she had a little revolver with her. And when the guy was next able to pull up beside her (on her right side) and seemed to be trying to run her off the road, she turned on the interior light in her car, pointed the pistol at him and started mouthing at him - "You want it, you want it." She said she intended to fire through her right window at him. That probably wouldn't have been a good thing to do but fortunately, she didn't have to fire. The guy saw the pistol in her hand, hit his brakes and she never saw him again. Now what would have happened if she hadn't been able to scare this creep off with a gun? Would he have eventually forced her off the road - very possible. If he did, would she have ended up a crime statistic - for sure.
