Fast-Chip Selects UMC for the Manufacturing of Its Network Processors; Network
Coprocessors Scheduled For Fabrication in Q1 2001

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2000--Fast-Chip,
Incorporated, a fabless semiconductor company dedicated to high
performance communications ICs, announced today it selected United
Microelectronics Corporations (UMC), a world leading semiconductor
foundry, as its premier foundry. UMC has committed to provide
manufacturing capacity to Fast-Chip for a series of Fast-Chip's
network coprocessors starting with their first-generation product, the
PolicyEdge(TM). Fast-Chip is gaining access to UMC's 0.18-micron
process technology which it plans to utilize to develop
next-generation products. Fast-Chip's sales opportunities are coming
from network equipment companies looking to develop next-generation
networking solutions. Networking OEMs' requirements for products that
support complex policy-based networking at OC-48 and OC-192 data rates
are the driving force behind the projected strong industry demand.
"UMC's wafer allocations for Fast-Chip will afford us with
capacity and flexibility to meet customer requirements," said Brad
Robson, Fast-Chip's director of operations. "After a thorough review
of the capabilities of UMC we are confident they will be a solid
partner as they can provide us with a reliable flow of high-quality
product."
Fast-Chip currently targets three distinct market segments with
the PolicyEdge(TM) family. These include: core/edge routers and
optical switches, multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), and
the broadband access markets. Products that will benefit from the
PolicyEdge(TM) network coprocessors include: VPN devices, bandwidth
managers, fast-firewalls, service aggregation devices, core switch
routers, and switch-based server clusters.
"Fast-Chip has been working with UMC since our earliest days,"
said Gregg Cook, Fast-Chip's president and CEO. "UMC is clearly a
world-class supplier of foundry services, and we are pleased to have
the company as our sole foundry partner."
"Fast-Chip is developing innovative products that require advanced
process technologies, and we are pleased to serve their foundry
needs," said Jim Ballingall, vice president of worldwide marketing at
UMC. "We are proud to provide the world-class advanced process
technology and foundry capacity necessary to enable Fast-Chip to
deliver high-quality products to its OEMs in fast turn-around cycles."
