Flapjack--New Hampshire is much more even politically these days than it's been in days past. It now has a two-term Democratic governor, for example. Knowing New Hampshire extremely well, I think Bush is gonna have a tough time winning the state. Especially in light of the current Administration's decision, of which Gore is a part, to help ease home heating oil constraints which will assuredly impact the Northeast, particularly if it becomes a cold November. Also noteworthy is the fact that he lost the primary there.

I agree that one has to look at the state by state. However, the polls are not consistent or even always timely for each state, and a lot of them are still pretty close. It would be helpful if I knew where to go to review the information on Maine, for example...........As for Maine being GOP country, well, that may have been, like the South being solidly Democratic, but as the parties become more ideologically homogenous, it is no longer so. It went for Clinton in the last election, for example........
