walked around with an unopened pack in my shirt pocket for weeks afterwards so it is really difficult for me to relate to the stories about how hard it is for many people to quit. Do you think it might be a body chemistry thing?

That's a good question, and I expect NoSmoking will address it. He's smarter on that stuff.

I think it's probably a mix of lots of Psych dependency, with some physical dependency. After they carved out a lung tumor from my Mom, who smoked going into the hospital, my Dad quit, but he was chewing on straws for 6 months.

I had a much harder time quitting Cigarettes than booze. I used the Shick method for both. Quit Cigarettes in 74, after 20 years of 3 packs of Salems a day. It was shock treatment. Tore a door off the hinges the first nite I was totally off. Still had the urge for about a month.

I quit booze in 92. I went to the Shick Hospital in Santa Barbara, and spent 10 days doing an adversion treatment, where I swilled it down and threw it up every other day. That really worked! I have had no urge to drink since.

It's a combination of personality-type and physiological addiction. Try this. Quit SI and walk around with a modem card in your shirt pocket.
