Toshiba Develops 512M Flash Memory Device

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (6502) has developed and begun shipping samples of a 512M flash memory device that can store one hour of music data that is about the same quality as a compact disc.

The NAND-type, large-capacity device is the product of joint development efforts with SanDisk Corp. under a partnership formed last year.

Mass production will begin in November. Samples of the memory alone cost 14,000 yen, while SmartMedia products cost 15,000 yen. By early next year, Toshiba plans to produce 300,000 flash memory devices and 100,000 SmartMedia products per month.

Later this month, the company will also begin shipping samples of a 1G product that integrates two of the 512M devices into a single package.

Samples of the memory alone will be priced at 28,000 yen, with SmartMedia products going for 30,000 yen. Mass production will begin in December, with monthly production of 30,000 units of each targeted by early next year.
