The Glenn Commission was created by Department of Education
Secretary Richard Riley in response to the poor math and science
scores of American students revealed in the TIMSS Report, which
documented math and science achievement for children
internationally.

Chaired by astronaut and former U.S. Senator John Glenn and
comprising four members of Congress, two governors, and
educators, the 25-member commission was formed last July and
will present its findings in the fall of 2000. .......................................................The results show that there is a dearth of good teachers to teach math and science.....http://www.wirednews.com/news/politics/0,1283,38876,00.html............The commission evaluated the state of kindergarten through
12th-grade math and science teaching in the U.S. at Riley's
request. It also put together a proposal for boosting the lackluster
achievement of U.S. youngsters.

Glenn also quoted from the National Assessment for Educational
Progress, which echoed the bleak TIMSS report findings. More than
a third of students failed to score even at the basic level for math
and science achievement, he said.

To change the downhill direction of performance in math and
science, reform must start with teachers, the report said. The
commission recommends new policies for teacher recruitment,
preparation, retention, and professional development.
